Surprise! After several dormant years, I’m back.
As social media sites become less functional, I think I will take a page out of Sci-Fi writer (and former Bee colleague) John Scalzi’s blog Whatever and start using my own site as a repository for the random thoughts I currently share more publicly.
It’s getting harder and harder to find value on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. It doesn’t mean I’m abandoning them, but I want to focus more energy here. A lot of what I post, mainly on Facebook, is kind of a public-facing journal, especially things I would like to show up in my TimeHop memories in years today. Some of what I write may be of interest or value to friends or family when I’m gone.
But social media platforms can go away. The rules can (and have) changed at the whim of the billionaire owners.
Other sites pop up all the time (especially in the wake of Twitter’s ownership change), and I’ve checked many of them out. But for me, they just don’t fill the space that social media did when it was at its best. And I do believe there was a time when social media had a good or at least better side than its current state.
I know a lot of people are leaving those old-school platforms. Others have had their profiles highjacked, unable to regain access to their own content on sites where customer service or support is a joke.
So I’m returning here. I’m not looking for clicks or page views. I am not concerned about who my audience might be, if I even have one. I just want a place for my thoughts that I can be the boss of. Hopefully it won’t be three more years before you hear from me again.
